Durango Transfer and Storage

How long has Durango Transfer & Storage been in business?
We purchased Durango Transfer in May 1984 after being professional van operators for United Van Lines for six years. Over the years, the whole family grew up and was involved in the business—from son Jamey, who became a driver and warehouse manager, to daughter Kelly, who became the general manager for several years. Even though they have moved on, it has remained “our family moving your family” because our employees are all extended family.
Durango Transfer is the only moving company in the Four Corners area that has a secure, palletized warehouse specifically constructed to store household goods. We’re personally involved in many of the moves, and take every opportunity to ensure that each customer gets the quality and friendly service they deserve.
What is the primary focus of your business?
The primary focus of our business is household goods moving and storage. We do local moves, office moves, intrastate moves within the state of Colorado, interstate moves through Atlas Van Lines, origin and destination work for international moves, long-term storage, and temporary storage. We also do what we call new products, which involves receiving, inspection, storage, and delivery out and set up of furniture and fixtures, both in-home, in-office, and commercial.
How is maintenance handled?
Mostly, with time and personnel permitting, the routine maintenance such as oil and filter changes and lube jobs are performed on site.
We do not have our own shop. We have an area outside in our covered bay where we can do the basics such as inflate tires, change windshield wipers, check and fill fluids, replace lights and lenses, etc.
What three challenges do you face with your maintenance program?
Cost, cost and cost. When possible, we try to purchase the parts ourselves so we don’t have to pay mark-up or shipping.
What are your specifications for your trucks? Do you purchase used and customize them to your specs? Or do you order new trucks built to your specs?
We don’t have specific specifications for trucks. We have purchased both new and used. We’ve been able to purchase what we needed on the used market. We have also purchased both new and used household goods trailers, and a flatbed trailer (new) to deliver storage in vaults to the customers’ homes. We have purchased both new and used straight trucks as well. We haven’t purchased any brand-new trucks or trailers in the last 10 years because the prices are so high and the profit margin in the industry is at an all-time low.
What programs do you have in place to ensure CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) compliance for your trucks/trailers?
We comply by doing a full federal inspection of all vehicles at least twice a year, performing routine maintenance, and doing repairs when needed.
