Tech in Trucking: Trailer tracking now cell-based
Trailer and asset tracking service provider SkyBitz will add land-based cellular options to its current satellite-based service. Under a new agreement with KORE Telematics, the company will now offer GPS tracking options using both GSM and CDMA cellular data service, reports Homaira Akbari, SkyBitz CEO & president.
The company’s current satellite system uses a proprietary tracking technology called Global Location System and self-powered tracking hardware to provide location services for unpowered trailers, containers and other mobile assets.
Diversifying into cellular communications and GPS-based location options will allow the company to expand into a variety of trucking applications that require a higher level of reporting, according to Akbari. The new agreement signals “a move to providing solutions that are device agnostic and network infrastructure agnostic,” she told American Trucker. “It’s really about capabilities rather than specific hardware devices.
SkyBitz is currently providing tracking services for about 200,000 units, all but 10% of them trailers and containers.
