Parts & Service:  New AC system keeps day cabs cool

As the temperature inside day cabs heats up, drivers can now get relief with a new battery-powered air conditioning system from Bergstrom designed specifically for their environment. The Nite day cab no-idle system helps reduce idling times in fleets operating day cabs, the company said.

“Just like their long-haul counterparts, day-cab drivers are subject to state and local idling restrictions,” said Bill Gordon, national director of aftermarket and director of global marketing. “This truly offers fleets the opportunity to keep day-cab drivers comfortable in the hot weather while adhering to anti-idling regulations.”

The system uses the same technology as Bergstrom’s Nite Plus unit, but is installed as a split system. The compressor and evaporator are installed between the truck’s seats, and the condenser is mounted to the exterior of the cab. It is powered by one or two deep-cycle, absorbed glass mat batteries. A separator is utilized to ensure the truck’s battery maintains enough power to start the vehicle. During normal truck operation, the system recharges through the alternator.

An optional heating unit is included and uses just 0.05 gals. of fuel per hour. The a/c unit does not require any fuel usage. The Nite system is CARB-approved.
